Feature: The student mag with Edie Campbell on its cover

Central Saint Martins has always been a school for doing the unexpected and with over 160 years’ worth of ground-breaking artists and experimental designers as alumni, it’s no shock that when it comes to running a bi-annual magazine, 1 Granary, it wouldn’t be anything like your average student publication.

Following the success of their second issue featuring former student Christopher Kane, 1 Granaryhave once again gone well beyond the realms of student journalism. For their third issue, not only have they managed to land Dazed 100 model Edie Campbell as their cover girl but also secure interviews with LVMH’s Delphine Arnault, legendary fashion journalist Sarah Mower and acclaimed designer Simone Rocha (another CSM grad).

Named as “Dazzling in the age of austerity,” the issue is about the need to “question and challenge the increasingly destructive system we’re in.”

Speaking to Dazed about the inspiration behind the issue, 1 Granary editor Olya Kuryshchuk said: “This year was not the most ‘exuberant’ in terms of the fashion climate for students, graduates, and young brands. Consider all the cuts to creative industries made by governments worldwide, alongside the addition of an extra fashion week to the schedule. What about the fact that the market is overcrowded with poorly trained fashion designers, and that the fashion education system is becoming yet another machine that sells fake dreams?”

“It’s hard to rise in this system, and easy to fall — take one glance left and right, and you see brands like Band of Outsiders and Meadham Kirchhoff closing up shop. Our third issue was a reaction to all this negativity, we wanted to highlight that the future is actually looking very bright (yes, dazzling) for young talent,” she continued.

Also included in the issue is an interview with another acclaimed designer and LVMH prize winnerThomas Tait, who talks about his future plans, past wins in the industry and starting an eponymous label; plus a look into fashion’s future with photography features showing standout pieces from this year’s BA and MA grads. Helping to bring out the best of the grad’s work is Dazed’s executive fashion editor Alister Mackie and styling/photography duo Lotta Volkova and Lea Colombo.

1 Granary is available to order from the magazine’s site and can also be bought at various stockists across London.
